ABOUT THE BOOK
This story arose from the serendipitous discovery of an old photograph about which nothing was known but the photographers’ names and the journey to uncover its mysteries. It led to the rediscovery of two early local photographers, Harold E. Harris and Ernest F. Twitchell, the Burlington Women’s Institute, and many colourful and interesting people and places.
The year is 1901. The setting is Burlington, Ontario, and the Burlington Gazette’s ‘The Week About Town’ social column. However, this book also contains Hamilton stories, ad the history stretches throughout Southern Ontario and beyond.
Also featured are Joseph Medlicott Scriven, Adelaide Hunter Hoodless, and obscure early photographers and artists John T. Aitken, E.UJ. Rowley, Daniel/Donald A. Shaw, Hugh Robertson Shaw, Robert F. Shaw, Julien R. Seavey and E. Wyly Grier.
And more, this book contains two additional stories: the story of Alice Hodges Freeland (the author’s great-great-grandmother) and the previously untold story of a Hamilton street naming (Ardvolich becoming Baker St.)
